Flora & Fauna

  • Marsh and Wetland Plants: In the Ecosistema Marjal, you’ll encounter reeds, rushes, and other water-loving vegetation typical of Mediterranean wetlands that thrive in the brackish soils and support insect and bird diversity.
  • Dune Vegetation: Near Ecosistema Dunar, coastal dune plants like marram grass and sea holly help stabilise the sandy soil and support insects adapted to salty, windy conditions.
  • Woodland Species: Within the Ecosistema Forestal, typical Mediterranean shrubs and trees such as wild olive, rockrose, and lentisk shelter small birds, reptiles, and invertebrates.
  • Birdlife: The wetlands and lake attract waterfowl and waders, especially in spring and autumn migration periods. Amphibians may also be seen in wetter sections of the marsh.

Local History & Culture

The Valldigna Valley, near Tavernes and Gandia, has long been shaped by human interaction with the landscape — from traditional agriculture to coastal trade. The trail’s connection to agricultural fields reflects centuries-old farming practices that have defined local life and shaped the region’s ecology.
Torre la Vall, a prominent feature of the route, is part of the network of old watchtowers that once protected the coast and hinterland from pirate raids and invasions during the medieval and early modern eras. These towers are cultural reminders of Valencia’s historical strategic importance on the Mediterranean.
The broader Valencian cultural landscape combines traditional farming villages, Mediterranean cuisine centred on rice and seafood, and festivals that celebrate seasonal agricultural cycles, all of which contribute to the identity of the places the trail passes through.
